You all know the story of the Goose Girl, don't you? I think the Grimm title is "The False Bride". Princess travels to wed prince, is tricked and looses her identity to the maid servant, and has to serve as the castle goose girl etc..

I always thought the scene of her talking to Falada, her faithful horse, was wonderfully gory and weird. The false bride has had Falada beheaded, and the goose girl manages to get the head hung by the castle gate where she can talk to it every day. Weird. Wonderfully weird.

Conrad, the boy who watches the geese, is seen here clutching his hat protectively. Whenever he tries to snatch a piece of the princesses golden hair while they're out in the field, she says a magic spell that makes the wind blow it away. What with magic wind and talking horse heads I think he's feeling rather worried about his hat being whisked away again ;)

My favourite part of this is the geese and the pears. I love the idea of matching pears with honeysuckle flowers, something about the combination is very satistfying to me. Don't know why. Lovely soft sweet summery green/golds I guess.

I finished this awhile back as a submission to the fairy tale/fantasy e-zine I have linked in my last journal. It's a pretty darn good e-zine, and was issued a few days ago, go and give it a read...can't wait to see the next issue, I think it's a fantastic idea :)

Geez I'm busy. I bet you're busy too...*sigh* I wish there were more time in the day, don't you?

The colours and composition of this are truly amazing!! It really does the story justice, I feel. (Can't recall ever reading this one, though.) :giggle: The girl's eyes are gorgeous! And I love the sky, and of course, the horse's head. :aww: Beautiful as always, Michelle!

I really like how this one looks. The weight of the lines and the...I don't know what word to use, so let's say 'thickness' of the colors really illustrates the scene PERFECTLY. I love the geese in particular -- their postures, expression, movement, color, and general goose-like-ness -- and how the goose girl seems to be truly listening to Falada. I don't remember ever reading this story, which is funny because when I was little I read the Grimm tales constantly, but this is an effective encouragement to do so.

As usual, your attention to detail makes this very engaging!
