I caught this fella eating plums outside my living room today andcaught some nice snaps of him. He kept peering at us through the branches and seemed to be showing off for the camera :D I love the look on his face, am I just imagining the amused expression?!

I'm surprised the birds are eating the plums already, they're not really ripe yet, usually they wait until later in the year to visit our tree. We've decided to put out seed for them this year, it's been extremely dry...I think there isn't very much food available at the moment :( Poor little things.

Beautiful picture !!

Toos are actually one of the worst birds to have as companions, my sister has one that we rescued from a pet store with a bad rep, that bird was passes from one branch to the next until it ended up at the one we collected him from, he's 7 yrs old and was badly treated. the thing is with these birds they're completely emotional and can easily get demented, which is why so many of them are put down once past the age of 2 - 3 yrs if they aren't treated right. Sonny, my sister's Too seems to have a split personality where's he's lovely one minute and a devil the next and the avian specialist we took him to see said that he should be put down because all those years in that small cage *somewhere around 100 cm by 75 cm* and the moving around, constant prodding of customers at the pet store etc really spoiled his personality and he's a danger to her, and the other rescues we have. A real shame, I really hate pet stores, those poor creatures :(

I used to wish I had a pet galah (the pink and grey cockatoo) but after awhile I realised it would always bother me that he was in a cage while there are happy free galahs right outside the window. It would make me feel too selfish and guilty in the end, so I won't ever have one.

I can't blame people for wanting cockatoos for pets, because they're so temptingly beautiful and clever, but I do wish there weren't so many kept caged up. It's sad, but it's also easy for me to say, they're everywhere here and I can enjoy them all the time, so it would be wrong for me to judge others who love them.

I just heard a sulfar crested screech outside lol...geez they're loud, I can't imagine that much noise in a house!

I'm glad you are rescuing the birds who've been mistreated, short of letting them live in their natural environment (which isn't an option if you're outside Australia ) it's the kindest thing anyone could do for them. Come to think of it, if they were raised in captivity, it's the ONLY option, isn't it? to you and your sis for your kindness...and good luck with Sonny. Maybe a big aviary where he doesn't have human contact would be an option?

I understand what're you're saying and agree, i hate seeing birds locked up too, it's not right :-( and maybe you think it's easy for you to say that because you have them outside, so it's not as if you never see them or have access to them but I think to truly appreciate nature and all it's glory, unless the creature is in a bad way which requires human intervention, better to leave them alone. So your decision was more noble than you give yourself credit for.

lol yeah, Sonny is a complete nut :-O and damn loud ! We can hear him halfway down the road !

I'll post a pic up of him, whenever my sister chastises him, he ends up looking sorry for all of 2 grand minutes before he's back at whatever he was messing around with before. He LOVES fingers and toes, made my mother scream that last time he bit her, we keep telling her not to touch him and she keeps trying to because 'he's so beautiful and soft * crazy ! He pulled out all his legs feathers, my sister jokes that he's keeping them smooth for his modelling contract :-D they've slowly started growing back though, and while the store where he was caged up said he never spoke at all, here he can't stop voicing his opinions

Yeah, we're going to try and save up and move to an area where we can put all of them inside the aviaries. I've been keeping in touch with the local bird park who said that giving the birds to them after rehab is not an option since the birds who've had human interaction for a while get stolen to be sold on the black market :shakefist:

I love cockatoos. I've always wanted one. I went with my aunt and cousing once to a pet store, and they had a cockatoo for sale, but the people selling her wanted alot for her and the cage, and we could never find a price just for her:(she was so sweet:)

ya many years ago a nearby pet store had a cockatoo, they were selling it for $2500 o_0

then one day there was a Palm Cockatoo (extremely rare, probably escaped from Zoo or something) sighted at a nearby forest and the store owner set a trap on the ground to catch it! I hated that store owner and never went back there. I doubt he ever caught the bird tho cuz he kept catching sparrows in his trap, LOL.
