I started this about 18 months ago, when I first started using digital media. I found the fur was slowly putting me in an early grave and put it aside for other things...kept returning to it for a few days at a time, and would work on it till I couldn't take the punishment anymore. I remember moaning and complaining to a friend when I first started working on this that I wished so much I could see meerkats on film, as I wanted to see how they move...of course, since then I've become totally addicted to Meerkat Manor lol! And that was actually a huge inspiration to keep working on this painting .
Fur is hard to paint. Short fur is REALLY hard to paint! Short fur on...what is it? 9 adult and 4 baby...meerkats is torment. Really, it is!
But I kept going back, it's a fun work and I like the concept
Well, there they are, meerkats at the theater. There is an earlier WIP file lurking about in my gallery if anyone wants to compare.
The idea for this came from my step son. We were talking about his favourite animal (meerkats, obviously ) and what they would do if they had the day off from the zoo and could go anywhere they wanted. This idea came to me on thinking about their attentive gaze, standing close together all looking in the same direction. Reminds me of people watching a film.
It would also be fun to have them at a tennis match, but I think I'm done with meerkats for the time being
I hope you enjoy this, comments and critique are. as always, most especially particulary welcome.
Awesome job on the fur. They certainly look like they are having a grand time. I'm sure my kids will love this one too. It's just one of those images that you can't help but smile at.
That is so very cute. But 13, oo, how unlucky. Tehe, lovely work, I love all the little details, like the dripping icecream, the meerkat nicking sweets, the popcorn... just lovely! I especially love the four little meerkats right at the front. gorgeous job!
Well, maybe we should call it 9 adults and 4 little ones? I don't like 13 either, hadn't thought of that until I wrote my description
Thanks for your kind comment I added the ice cream dripping down to the letters below at the last minute as I was just finishing up I think that's my favourite part of the painting now lol
Thank you very much...and I'm glad to have the chance to add you to my watch list (thought I already had you on it!) your work is beautiful Nice to see your gallery again!
I have to admit the fur almost did me in, several times I thought I'd never finish this. I have to show this to my kids in the morning, finished while they're sleeping--but that's the best time to work, isn't it?! I hope your kids like it too

Two people do not make a whole,
and if one person alone is laking
Then the emptyness will never be filled
from outside hopes and dreams.
