Be careful when you doodle, who knows where you'll end up

I have some (not very good) tiger pics from our last visit to the zoo. Here's the progression from a simple doodle to...um...something entirely different:

So there I am doodling a tiger, challenging myself by turning the viewpoint about 30 degrees from my reference photo (a very good excercise to sharpen your spatial skills btw) slapping on paint, tweaking things here and there, when I found that Blake poem "The Tyger" stuck in my head as I'm working. See here if you don't know it by heart already [link]

So slowly my tyger gained a haze of fire around him.

So I'm painting, painting this tyger (burning bright) and listening to NPR, thinking of the middle east and the ancient art I love so much. Remember this [link] Gotta love a winged lion.

Anyway, there he sat with a pair of wings. The wings were SO much work, I spent about a week on the large pair while the tiger sat in rough sketch below. It gave me a lot of time to sit there thinking as I worked, wondering where this was leading.

At some point I found myself thinking how much this strange creature reminded me of the seraphim--Six winged fiery angels who bring justice. They are sometimes described by the ancients as serpents with six wings, but I still think this fits somwhat with the traditional view.

In the tree of life (Kabbalah) the concept of justice is paired with mercy, rather an elegent idea, I think. I'd like to make a companion piece to this eventually.

No. I'm not a religious person :) I just doodle too much

Edited again 25 July '02, cause I'm a dork who can't leave well enough alone lol I wanted to clean up the wings, define the fur a bit more and generally play around. I like this one too much to leave it alone :D

I see a lot of art with Biblical themes and descriptions making it blatantly clear that one is not religious, like it's something to be embarrassed about. I spent too long being "embarrassed" of my beliefs and to shun my creator is a wicked thing for me to do, and selfish at that.... so, hopefully that was just clarification in this case and not pride.
I know because I struggle with my own pride and part of letting it go was letting God back in.
1 John 3:13
Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

2 Peter 3:3-4

Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

I am only quoting scripture to explain that yes, those who believe WILL be mocked by the "majority" and a lot of people just want to be "liked" when being respected should be far more important. I don't know why we feel the need to be embarrassed of our faith- especially when in many countries people can be killed for it, some women who come to Christ are beaten by their own husbands (I am quite serious, this is coming after just recently hearing some baptist missionaries speak about their experiences with families they've witnessed to) look at the description on this photograph: [link] (and the text on the shirt)..... we are blessed to have the chance to believe/worship/own and read a Bible without fear and yet I can tell you that persecution is alive and well even in our "free country" and our obsession with relativism has more to do with wanting to believe tat you can do whatever you want than being more accepting of other's beliefs. The double-standard for Christians occurs when the world's view of "anything goes" (for lack of a better term) conflicts directly with the teachings of the Bible. We too, are just standing up for what we believe in. and get labeled as homophobic, intolerant, etc. The truth is that there are some things that God tells us are wrong, according to the scriptures and it is not the PEOPLE but the SIN we have a problem with. I know a lot of Christians set a very poor example for Christ's/God's love and I'm sorry, I hope that this all is coming across okay because text can make it hard to communicate delicate matters.

Now, on to the art itself. as for the above, I was not trying/intending to offend.
This piece is quite striking and seraph as I recall means "burning one/s" (seraphim) so the fire surrounding the creature is fitting and beautifully done. The wings are just amazing and I really like how you got them positioned much like they are described in the scripture, that part I've been struggling with as wing anatomy is challenging for me and 6 wings is intricate in itself but flying, covering the feet and covering the eyes all at once? I think you handled that very well. The colors you chose are wonderful together and I really like the blue-greens against the tiger's orange pelt. The middle and backgrounds lend themselves well to the creature as well as the peacock feather.

Lovely work my friend.

I hope you understand my concern, I have seen SO much artwork where people treat faith like it is something to be ashamed of when they use the concepts from the Bible for inspiration, personally I think the holy spirit is trying to move them but I know a statement like that seems strange to people who don't believe, I know I used to find it all very odd myself and was one of those scoffers described for some time in my life....

God Bless.
keep up the great artwork.
